Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race

Thrill seekers and canines face off with a true test of survival in the Iditarod Race. Stretching mountain ranges, frozen desolate tundra, dense forest all doused in long hours of darkness and blinding winds challenge each second. For 1049 miles, teams race for the win from Anchorage to Nome along the Bering Sea’s coast in a matter of 10 to 17 days.

Experiencing this important test of survival is one thing but witnessing a piece of the competition is another. Even if you can’t participate in the race itself, you can show your support to an event that injects excited activity into local villages and large cities. Teams of 12 to 16 dogs are captained by people from all walks of life: miners, artists, doctors, fishermen, lawyers, Swiss, Canadian, French and more. The event, and organization, is run almost entirely by volunteers.

The Iditarod is more than just a race – it’s a testament to the past. The Iditarod Trail had humble beginnings as a mail and supply route from coastal towns to inland mining camps. Their means of transportation? Dog sleds.

Part of Alaska’s pride, the Iditarod Trail also acted as an emergency epidemic highway – diphtheria loomed over the lives of many, dependent on serum brought in by the valiant mushing teams.
